Montessori for Social Justice Conference

csp joy social justice Jul 03, 2018
WE SPENT THIS LAST WEEKEND OF JUNE 2018 IN ST. PAUL, MN AT THE MONTESSORI FOR SOCIAL JUSTICE CONFERENCE.

Wow! What a powerful conference. What a powerful group of people working together to change Montessori and all other educational spaces. What a radical and justice-oriented community space and what strong allyship from white brethren.

We presented on a panel with some of our students from Headwaters School. We shared about the Middle School Social Justice course Lorena teaches and the students shared some of their projects and reflections. It was beautiful to hear them share about how they’ve learned regarding issues of race & equity and are working hard to change our country for the better. Two students shared about an article they wrote about immigration to be shared with the school community, parents included. Two other students shared about a project they designed in order to meet the needs of a food desert here in Austin. One student shared the board game she created to teach about the school-to-prison pipeline. Three students shared about a short documentary they created where they explain (essentially) critical race theory by and for middle schoolers. Their work was phenomenal and it’s at the core of what keeps us educators going.

Additionally, we were the Keynote speakers on Saturday, June 30th. We shared about teaching joy and being joyful as a form of resistance. The video begins with an offering/honoring and then an introduction for us.
